Overview

CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) is Apple’s open‑source, standards‑based printing solution for macOS, iOS and other Unix‑like platforms. It leverages the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) and provides a web UI, command‑line tools (lp, lpr, lpadmin) and a C API to add, share, and manage local or network printers—including modern “everywhere” devices and legacy models via PPD drivers. With built‑in support for a wide range of file formats (PDF, PostScript, images, text) and extensive filter pipelines, CUPS turns any compatible printer into a fully featured print server. The project is released under the Apache License 2.0, encouraging community contributions and free use.
