Overview

EncFS is an open‑source, LGPL‑licensed encrypted virtual filesystem that operates in userspace through the FUSE library, translating every file operation into its encrypted counterpart on the underlying storage. First released in 2003, it was one of the earliest FUSE‑based solutions, offering per‑file encryption long before full‑disk options became commonplace. The project is currently being modernized with a Rust rewrite—already functional in read‑only mode—while the legacy C++ code remains available for reference. Though a robust historical tool, newer alternatives like GoCryptFS are recommended for fresh deployments.
