Overview

libpcap is a cross‑platform library that provides a single, system‑independent API for capturing network packets at user level. It abstracts the many OS‑specific capture mechanisms (BPF on *BSD/macOS, Linux packet sockets, GNU/Hurd, etc.) and offers a powerful filter language based on the classic BSD Packet Filter. By handling both in‑kernel and user‑space filtering, libpcap enables tools for traffic analysis, security monitoring, and debugging to be written once and run anywhere. The project is actively maintained by the Tcpdump Group, with open contribution guidelines and the full source available on GitHub.
