Overview

Open vSwitch (OVS) is an Apache‑2‑licensed, multilayer software switch designed for production‑grade virtual networking, supporting a wide range of Linux‑based hypervisors such as KVM and VirtualBox. It offers advanced features—including VLANs, NIC bonding, QoS, tunneling protocols (VXLAN, Geneve, GRE, etc.), OpenFlow 1.0 extensions, and high‑performance kernel‑mode forwarding—while also providing a flexible userspace datapath. The core components—ovs‑vswitchd, ovsdb‑server, and a kernel module—are managed via utilities like ovs‑vsctl, ovs‑appctl, and ovs‑ofctl, enabling comprehensive configuration and control of virtual switches.
