Overview

Ruff is a Rust‑powered Python linter and formatter that delivers order‑of‑magnitude speed gains—often 10‑100× faster than tools like Flake8, Black, or isort—while offering a single, cohesive interface. It can be installed via pip, uv, Homebrew, or a standalone script, works out‑of‑the‑box with pyproject.toml, and provides built‑in caching, automatic fixers, and more than 800 native rules, including re‑implemented Flake8 plugins. Ruff serves as a drop‑in replacement for an entire suite of linting and formatting utilities, making it ideal for large monorepos and CI pipelines, and is already used by projects such as Apache Airflow, FastAPI, and Pandas. The project is actively maintained by Astral (the creators of uv and ty) and includes first‑party editor integrations for VS Code
