Overview

syslog-ng is an open‑source log daemon that gathers, parses, enriches, and forwards messages from a wide range of sources—including traditional syslog, JSON, unstructured text, message queues, and databases—to destinations such as files, Elasticsearch, Kafka, or PostgreSQL. It offers powerful built‑in parsers (csv‑parser, kv‑parser, db‑parser, etc.) and can transform logs on‑the‑fly, making it ideal for both simple system‑log collection and complex, structured‑application logging. Thanks to its high‑performance engine, a single node can handle up to 600‑800 k messages per second while still supporting advanced filtering and classification. Developed and maintained by a vibrant volunteer community, syslog-ng is packaged for most Linux distributions, macOS, and Docker, and welcomes contributions from anyone interested in improving log management.
